Caledonia trailer fire leaves one dead, several displaced

CALEDONIA, Minn. (KTTC) -- One person is dead Wednesday morning after a brutal fire ravaged two trailers in Caledonia.

The fire occurred just a little after 1 a.m. on the 300 block of Eastside Lane within the Eastside Trailer Park.

Caledonia Fire Department arrived on the scene to find one trailer completely engulfed in flames and a second trailer with extensive fire damage as well. Both homes are a total loss.

Police officials were able to evacuate the surrounding homes once they arrived on scene.

One man was in his home before it was swallowed by the fire, leaving little to salvage besides some birth certificates and personal documents kept in a fire safe.

"I was in the far side of the house and I smelled smoke so I came to this side of the house and looked out the window and see this trailer was completely in flames," said Phillip Foster, a roommate of a man who owns one of the devastated homes.

The other home belonged to a woman who tragically lost her life in the fire.  One neighbor remembered her only encounter with her.

"She was kind of a loner, she stayed inside all the time, she had people go get her groceries and everything," said Tiffany Loomis.  "So, I mean I only talked to her once. She came up to the place of work and she seemed like a very nice lady."

Officials are continuing their investigation into what exactly caused the fire, although they know it began in the deceased woman's home.

The individuals displaced by the fire are working with the Red Cross to find shelter.
