UWL To Host 2 More National Tournaments

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- Safe to say UW-La Crosse's Deputy Director of Athletics Kim Blum enjoyed the holidays a little more this year.

"It's a lengthy process that you go through," said Blum. "They evaluate everything in terms of--Can you host people here? Do you have enough room? Do you have enough places for people to stay?--Things like that."

She's not talking about planning some sort of elaborate ugly sweater party. Instead, Kim described part of the lengthy process she went through to help secure UWL's national championship hosting duties for Division III Wrestling in 2017 and Outdoor Track and Field in 2018.

"What it says from my perspective is that UWL knows how to host a national event and host it well," said Dave Clements, La Crosse Visitors Bureau Executive Director.

That provides a boon for area businesses, of Black Friday proportions. Crunching the numbers following the wrestling tournaments in 2011 and 2012, Clements found they bring in, on average, $500,000 to the local economy.

Clements said, "That's direct spending. That's people coming to town, dumping out a half a million dollars and leaving."

What those people get in return is to sit back and enjoy the culmination of many years and plenty of late nights full of decking the halls.

Blum said, "Literally there's a group of 10-12 of us out at midnight the night before hanging up the last minute banners and things like that."

...Which, for Blum, is all in the spirit of giving.

"Just the fact that people thought enough of their time here on the UWL campus to say something to you is very rewarding."

In addition to hosting wrestling and track in 2017 and 2018 respectively, UWL will welcome the NCGA Gymnastics National Championship Meet in March of 2015.
