Year in Review: Crime in La Crosse


LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW)-- 2013 brought a number of drug arrests in the La Crosse area as police continue to combat the growing use of heroin and meth.

In April, an on-going drug investigation lead to the arrest of Jonathan Banaszkiewicz at his home on Jackson Street.

And in July, police made a bust at a northside La Crosse Motel, where three were arrested for manufacturing methampehtamine.

In November, 28-year-old Malachi Hankel was arrested and charged in the death of Thomas Tremain. According to police Hankel provide the heroin that led to Tremain's overdose. Hankel is currently in jail awaiting trial.

Police also investigated a homicide at the Cass Street Kwik Trip on June 2, where 24-year old Demario Lee was stabbed just outside the store's bathroom. According to police surveillance footage captured the incident and two days later 25-year-old Mitrel Anderson was arrested.

Police say Anderson and his girlfriend Brittany Jones fled to Madison after the incident. Anderson is charged with first degree intentional...and Jones faces charges of aiding and harboring a felon. Both are in jail awaiting trials set for 2014.
