Study finds vitamin E fights symptoms of Alzheimer's

MADISON (WKOW) -- Vitamin E may be instrumental in slowing down the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. That's according to a new study involving 14 Veterans Hospitals, including the William Middleton Memorial Hospital in Madison.

Results from the four year study showed patients with Alzheimer's who took Vitamin E had a 25% decline in daily-living activities caused by their disease.

Dr. Sanjay Asthana was the principal investigator of the Madison trial and believes the results may lead to Vitamin E becoming part of future Alzheimer's treatment and research.

Dr. Asthana says, "If they have certain genes or repeated head trauma, whatever the risk factor might be we might want to look in those patients to see if Vitamin E stops the disease from expressing itself in terms of symptoms, or does it even prevent them from getting Alzheimer's."

The full results of the study were released Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
