La Crosse, Wisconsin (WXOW) ---- La Crosse firefighters will now be able to use the drug Narcan in the fight against heroin. Narcan is the drug that reverses the affects of narcotics.
In 2013 emergency responders say they've used the antidote at least 200 times. That number is 5 times higher than just 6 years ago.
The fire department says the drug will help them save lives since they are often first on the scene.
EMS Trainer, Frank Garritano says "as of right now the state has a mandated training program that we should be done with by mid January and our training will be complete the first week of February."
Narcan boosts blood pressure and heart rate. It can wake up a person who overdosed almost immediately.
