La Crosse, WI (WXOW) In less than two weeks Gundersen Health System will move into it's new hospital. News 19's Amy DuPont toured the emergency services department and shows us some of the facility upgrades.
Patient privacy is the common theme throughout the new Gundersen emergency services department. All 27 rooms are single rooms. Patients enter through one door, staff through another. "We also have nurse servers. That's like a closet that goes towards the core that has doors on both sides. So, when we are stocking rooms, replenishing supplies and linens that can be done from the outside without anyone coming into your room."
The facility is also much larger; almost double the size of the current ER. Clinical manager Stephanie Hill says the extra space helps make the ER a less chaotic place.
One of the huge upgrades to the ER department is the new ambulance bay. In the past, ambulances pulled up outside which meant the patients had to go from the outside and into the building. Now four to six rigs can fit in this room at one time. Patients never set foot outside. This room also serves as a decontamination room. Paramedic Rick Barton says it's completely contained making it safer for the environment. "There is storage drainage capacity underneath. Any deacon material can drain directly to storage tanks and be emptied at a later time."
This week staff are touring the facility, getting comfortable with the lay-out, and learning where all of their equipment will be located. The ER will be the first department to open to patients on January 19th.
The public has a chance to tour the new facility this weekend. Gundersen is offering tours both Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM until 5 PM.
