Minn. campaign board taking new look at Senate DFL

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A campaign finance case that resulted in a $100,000 penalty against the Senate DFL Caucus is getting a fresh look from regulators.

The state's campaign board met privately Tuesday to discuss whether the case deserves more scrutiny. A settlement last month with the caucus resulted in the penalty over a complaint of illegal coordination with more than a dozen candidates.

The Associated Press objected to the meeting's closure. Board executive director Gary Goldsmith says a private meeting was needed to discuss potential litigation and examine "irregularities" in how the board arrived at the settlement.

The board ruled last month that cooperation between the party and its candidates to produce campaign mailings destroyed the wall needed to keep them independent.

Senate DFL lawyer Charlie Nauen declined comment before the closed session.
