COPY-BREAKING: Home, car intentionally rigged to explode

The Marathon County Sheriff's Department says multiple explosive devices were intentionally set in a home and car at a rural Wausau home that exploded Thursday morning. Officials say five devices were found.

Authorities say human remains were found in the basement of the home Friday morning. They say they believe the remains belong to the man responsible for the explosion. The name of the man has not been released.

Marathon County Sheriff's Department officials say the devices have been "taken care of" and the scene is now safe.  They have not elaborated on what type of devices were found. Authorities say there were hundreds of feet of fuse connecting the devices to the vehicle and the home. They say the car never exploded in Thursday's incident -- but authorities later safely detonated it.

Neighbors were asked to leave their homes at one point, but have since returned.

Officials say the house exploded around 6:45 Thursday morning on the 8000 block of Pioneer Lane, northeast of Wausau.

"If someone was in there, they'd never survive that," said Town of Wausau Fire Chief Kevin Yolitz. "I've got a captain that lives right next to the homestead here and his house windows and house just shook. He said he'd never felt anything like that before and it just rattled his windows and that's not that far away."

The Department of Criminal Investigation is on scene. The bomb squad has left the scene, but the vehicle is now being used as the command center.
