LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – There are some people in the community who have put in the extra effort to make La Crosse County a healthier place to live.
The healthy living collaboration awarded Mayo Clinic Health System Franciscan Healthcare, Old Oak Family Farm, and Jodie Visker with the Healthy Living Hero Awards Friday.
Visker has built gardens for the Onalaska School District.
She also works with students, ages six to 17, and teaches them where food comes from and how to grow their own vegetables.
"I just think it's really important for everyone to know where their food comes from," Visker said. "It's not just coming from the grocery store. It actually originates in the ground and it grows on plants and sometimes underground."
This is the first year for the Health Living Hero Awards. The collaboration hopes to award youth for their efforts next year.
