COPY-UPDATE: Authorities identify suspect in Eau Claire Co. shooting

Eau Claire Co. (WQOW) - Eau Claire County authorities have confirmed to WQOW News 18 that the suspect involved in the incident is Paul Lynch, 46, of rural Eau Claire.  In June of 2013 he was sentenced to up to 7 months in jail on three convictions of illegally possessing firearms.

A press conference is being held at 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.  We'll be sure to update this story as soon as we learn more.

Eau Claire Co. (Press Release) - On January 13, 2014 at 9:42 p.m., the Eau Claire County Sheriff's Office responded to the Town of Union for a report of domestic violence where the male resident was disorderly.  The male resident was identified as a person the agency was familiar with as they have responded to the home 12-times in the past two-years.  In previous contacts the male was unruly, violent, threatening, and uncooperative and weapons had to be removed from the home.

On arrival, deputies believed a female in the home was in danger and the male was excessively violent.  The tactical team was activated.  While deputies were outside the residence, the male suspect exited the home with an assault-type rifle and fired at a deputy.  An exchange of gunfire ensued and the male suspect was wounded and ultimately transported to a local hospital.

The Eau Claire Police Department is investigating the incident and the deputy, by policy, is on administrative leave pending the completion of the investigation.

Upon initial review, Sheriff Ron Cramer supports the actions of the deputy and has expressed his concern for all families involved.
