LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) A man who recruited for the Navy is charged with possession of child pornography.
According to the criminal complaint, the investigation focusing on 35-year old David J. Humphries began when parents of an Onalaska High School freshman told the principal about online contact Humphries had with the student. Humphries had done some recruiting at the school.
The principal called Onalaska Police and the Navy who questioned Humphries. According to the complaint, it was during that questioning that authorities discovered child pornography on Humphries' computers.
The student was not physically harmed and the investigation is ongoing.
Humphries is currently in the La Crosse County Jail.
Onalaska principal Jared Schaffner informed parents about the incident through a letter. He said the investigation shows there is no evidence that other OHS students were targeted.
In his letter, Schaffner says this situation presents a reminder about talking with students about internet safety. Schaffner wrote, in part, "In this case, the student thought one of the recruiter's messages 'didn't seem right.' He showed his parents the message who also thought it was inappropriate. Both the student and parents went with their gut reactions and reported it."
