County Board passes plan for new administrative center

Posted:

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW)-- La Crosse County will relocate it's administrative center to the nearby Associated Bank building and sell the current administrative center.

The existing county administrative building more than 50 years old and filled with asbestos and in need of heating and cooling upgrades. So Thursday night, after months of debate, the County board voted 19 to 7 in favor of selling that building and relocate.

The estimated cost of the approved plan is $19.4 million. It was the cheapest of the three options the county considered.

The plan has three parts, that will be happening simultaneously. The county will sell the current building for $250,000 to a developer who will convert it to housing for Western students. The county will also purchase and renovate the Associated Bank building and renovate it-- that will be the new administrative center. Lastly, the county will develop Lot C, the parking lot at the courthouse and include a site for the new Associated Bank building.

The next step is figuring out exactly what the Lot C development will look like because it will include more than just the bank building.

"The community involvement I hope we launch in a couple of weeks will be looking at shared parking, how much density do we want to see on that lot, what kind of mixed sue might be there," said County Board Chair Tara Johnson. " [We will be] looking at sustainability issues, but our hope is that that whole block gets developed."

The goal is to have all the designs and plans for lot c finished by March of 2015 so construction can begin. If all goes according to plan, the county would move in to the new administrative center starting in August of 2016.
