LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – Area Boy Scouts are learning skills to survive in the wilderness this weekend.
Nine scouts in troops from La Crosse and De Soto are camping overnight at the La Crosse County Landfill.
Using skis, twine and wood pine strips, the boys had to work together to build their own sleds. They then participated in a sled race that tested their navigational skills.
The scouts also build their own shelters from snow and camped in them overnight.
"We get lost, let's say, when we're hiking or something, and we're gonna be outside and we're stuck, so then we're gonna build a shelter and know what to do in the situation," said Boy Scout Zach Mayer.
