New study touts health benefits of lingonberries

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Lutefisk, lefse and lingonberries. All Scandinavian treats that are undeniably Minnesotan.

In addition to being delicious to eat, a new study released this week touts that the sweet lingonberry could also prevent obesity and diabetes.

Over the course of three months, researchers at Sweden's Lund University fed a group of mice a high-fat diet, in addition to a variety of berries, like blackberries, raspberries, and lingonberries.

The mice who ate a diet rich in lingonberries maintained stable blood sugar levels and also did not gain weight in spite of eating a high fat diet- in addition to the berries.

One local lingonberry lover said the berry is not only nutritious, but delicious.
"They are almost like a close cousin to a cranberry, but they have a much more intense flavor and they are just a little bit mellower," said Walter Hanson of Rochester's The Nordic Shop.
