LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW)-- The propane shortage is hitting those who use propane for heat, but it's also impacting stores that sell smaller propane tanks.
Dave Omara is the manager of Ace Hardware on the Southside of La Crosse. His store stocks 20 and 30 pound propane tanks.
"The majority of the are using it for heaters or ice fishing," Omara said. "We are selling more now to people who need it for heaters and things."
Omara says he knew the propane shortage was coming so he stocked up. Right now he's got about 40 tanks but when he needs to reorder, he'll be paying substantially more.
"I called our supplier this morning and it looks like we got a 50 percent increase on our cost," Omara said.
That of course means customers will see price hikes. Omara says depending on demand, those increases could happen in about a week. But he hopes the shortage is short lived and the prices go down as quickly as then went up.
