White Cloud makes La Crescent boy a winner

LA CRESCENT, Minn. (WXOW) - Good news for fans of the La Crescent boy who was competing in a national contest with his artwork.

White Cloud announced Monday afternoon that due to an outpouring of support for Obi Christenson, they are making him an honorary fourth place winner in their Miracle Designs contest.

It means that Obi, along with the other three winners, will have their designs featured on White Cloud Facial Tissue boxes, receive a one-year supply of White Cloud products, and earn a $15,000 donation to their Children's Miracle Network Hospital.

In the contest, Obi finished in fourth place by 82 votes in the national Facebook contest.

There's more to the story, however.  The third place finisher, Rylee Raine Schrader, posted a message on the White Cloud Facebook page saying that she would prefer the company to award third place to Obi instead.

White Cloud opted to award prizes to the top four however.

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Despite a push from former NFL quarterback Brett Favre, Obi Christenson of La Crescent fell 83 votes short in the national contest he was competing in.

That's how many votes Obi needed to take third place and win a contest where his artwork would appear on White Cloud brand tissue boxes.

The contest ended Friday at midnight. On the company's Facebook page where the contest was located, Obi finished with 35,805 votes, while the third place finisher had 35,887 votes.

On Tuesday, Favre asked fans on his website to help out Obi with the contest. Favre had spoken to Obi while the boy was at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse for cancer treatment last summer.

The 8-year-old is at a Madison hospital as of Saturday morning according to his CaringBridge page. He's battling neuroblastoma cancer.

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - UPDATE: A check of the White Cloud page on Facebook at 2:00 p.m. on Friday shows that Obi is in third place by approximately 2,000 votes.  The contest ends at midnight.

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Football legend Brett Favre is asking his fans to help out a La Crescent boy undergoing treatment for cancer.

On the homepage of his website, Favre has a message looking for support for Obi Christenson.  The 8-year-old, who is battling neuroblastoma cancer, is competing in a contest to have his design featured on White Cloud brand tissue boxes.  If Obi finishes in the top three, Gundersen Health System will also win $15,000.  The contest runs until Friday on White Cloud's Facebook page.

In the message, Favre asks his fans to "help us bring Obi some joy and hope during his tough battle with cancer."

It isn't the first time that Favre has reached out to the youth.  Last July, Favre called to talk to Christenson as the boy was getting treatment at Gundersen.  A Favre fan from Madison who saw the story about the call sent an autographed Favre football to Obi.

UPDATE: A check of the contest at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday showed that Obi's design is now in third place in the voting with nearly 24,500 votes.
