Eau Claire, Wis (UW-L Media Relations) - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 60-57 at UW-Eau Claire Saturday night in Zorn Arena. The Eagles drop to 12-8 overall and 6-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blugolds improve to 9-11 overall and 2-9 in the conference.
UW-Eau Claire never trailed in the first half. The Blugolds led 8-7 when they went on a 11-0 run to lead 19-7 with 11:43 left after a Andrew Duxbury three-point field goal. UW-L came back with a 8-2 run to cut its deficit to 21-15 with 7:22 remaining after a Ryan Kruser three-pointer. UW-Eau Claire led 23-17 with 6:07 left in the opening half when it went on a 10-2 run to take its largest lead of the contest at 33-19 with 1:44 remaining.
The Blugolds led 33-22 at halftime.
UW-L opened the second half on a 13-6 run to trail 39-35 with 12:44 remaining. The Eagles later trailed 42-39 with 8:16 left on a Calahan Skogman jumper, but the Blugolds scored five of the next six points to lead 47-40. Skogman made a layup and Braden Tice a three-point field goal for UW-L to cut the lead to 47-45 with 5:19 left.
The Eagles took their first lead of the game at 50-49 with 3:44 remaining on a Kruser three-point field goal, but the Blugolds' Jacob Kohner scored seven consecutive points to give UW-Eau Claire a 56-50 with 2:03 left. Skogman made four straight free throws, including a pair with 1:15 remaining, to make it 56-54.
Kurtis Moody scored on a layup with :52 remaining to give UW-Eau Claire at 58-54 advantage and UW-L's Lucas Collom cut the lead to 58-57 with a three-pointer with :13 left. Adam Hjelter converted a pair of free throws with :08 remaining to make it 60-57 and Tice missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with :01 left.
UW-L shot 33.3% from the field, including 33.3% (nine-of-27) from three-point range, and 77.8% (14-of-18) at the free throw line.
Skogman led the Eagles with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Collom finished with 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Trent Schmidt added nine points.
UW-Eau Claire shot 43.4% from the field, including 36.4% (eight-of-22) from three-point range, and 75.0% (six-of-eight) at the line.
Hjelter led the Blugolds with 14 points and nine rebounds while Kohner and Moody each finished with 12 points. Lewis Mau had nine points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
