Blair, Winona, Sparta telling residents to leave their water on

BLAIR, SPARTA, Wis./WINONA, Minn. (WXOW) - The cities of Winona, Sparta and Blair are asking residents to leave their water running in one faucet in their home due to the potential for frozen pipes.

The city's water departments cite temperatures this week that will drive the frost down further into the ground and could potentially cause frozenpipe problems.

Residents are being told to let a small stream of water run from one faucet on until further notice.   In Sparta, residents will receive a water and sewer credit for this usage.

In Blair, water bills will be adjusted accordingly.

If Blair homeowners fail to comply, officials said they will have to pay for any problems that occur.

Issues with deepening frost caused two water main breaks in Winona during the past two weeks according to their Water Department.

They also remind residents to also know where the water meter and main shut off valve is located in their homes. The area should be kept free of cold drafts with some kind of warmth.  The valve should be accessible in case the water need to get turned off in the event of a leak or break.
