Gov. Dayton announces his running mate

Posted:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton is turning to a trusted adviser to be his running mate as he seeks a second term.

Dayton has chosen Tina Flint Smith, his chief aide since he took office in 2011, to replace Lt. Gov. Yvonne Prettner Solon. Prettner Solon didn't want to serve a second term.

Both Dayton and Smith call Minneapolis home, so the pick goes against the tradition of having a geographically balanced ticket.

Before serving Dayton, Smith was chief of staff for then-Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak.

Smith is deeply rooted in Minnesota politics, counting Walter Mondale among her past bosses. She also served as a top official for the regional Planned Parenthood operation.

St. Paul, MN (WXOW) -Governor Mark Dayton announced Tuesday that Tina Smith will be his running mate in his bid for reelection.

Smith has served as Chief of Staff in the Governor's Office for the past three years.  Gov. Dayton said Smith brings decades of experience in both the private and public sectors and is a proven leader who has demonstrated time and again her unique ability to solve problems, develop consensus and deliver results.

"Tina is the best administrator with whom I have ever worked. She has the exceptional ability to get people working together to make things happen," said Governor Dayton. "She will soon be traveling across the state, listening to, and learning from, the people of Minnesota."

Democratic Lt. Gov. Yvonne Prettner Solon announced in January that she was not running for re-election alongside Gov. Dayton.
