Alma, Wis. (WXOW) – An autopsy is underway on an inmate in the Buffalo County jail who was found unresponsive in his jail cell Monday afternoon.
Sheriff Michael Schmidtknecht said in a statement the 21-year-old man was found unresponsive from an apparent suicide attempt. Staff members provided first aid until EMS arrived. Officials said the man was taken to a hospital in Wabasha but did not survive.
An autopsy is being done by the Olmsted County Medical Examiner.
The incident is being reviewed by the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office.
The man isn't being identified at this time, according to Schmidtknecht, except to say he's formerly from Pierce County Wisconsin.
The Sheriff's Department is planning an outside independent audit to be done regarding their jail procedures.
