LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW)- The 3rd annual Biggest Health Challenge-La Crosse, sponsored by the La Crosse County Health Department, will begin on February 10th.
The goal of the program is to help the community reach their health goals while having fun and become the healthiest county in Wisconsin.
According to the County Health Rankings & Roadmap, La Crosse is currently the 21st healthiest county out of 72 total counties in Wisconsin. Neighboring Vernon County ranks 9th overall. The health in each county is measured by multiple factors including mortality, disease, health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors, and the overall physical environment.
The 8 week challenge runs through April 4th and is open to anyone over 18 years old. Last year about 600 people participated overall. The La Crosse County Health Department is hoping they can maintain that number but more importantly keep participants engaged throughout the whole 8 weeks.
Registered Dietitian Jennifer Miller says community health businesses have benefited from this program by offering free incentives or prizes to participants. By promoting what the Coulee Region has to offer, it shows making the healthy choice is an easy choice.
Those interested can join the challenge in one of two ways:
The first option is free to anybody who would like to participate. They can enjoy all of the free services and classes provided over the 8 week period.
The second option requires a $10 fee. Participants can still enjoy all of the free classes and services offered, but they are also entered into the weight loss challenge. Winners are chosen based upon percent body weight lost. Participants must attend five out of the eight weekly weigh-ins to qualify for the cash prizes. Last year, 5 winners received cash prizes from $500 to $110. The top winners will also receive a free one-year membership to the YMCA.
The free services provided to all Biggest Health Challenge participants include:
Other free services include cooking sessions and samples, nutrition counseling, fitness demonstrations, presentations, prizes, emails and Facebook tips to keep you motivated, and health screenings.
“At this point many people have already given up on their New Year’s resolutions,” says Miller, “and we want to provide this challenge to those interested in making nutrition and physical activity changes in their lifestyle that are easy and to make part of their daily routine.”
