La Crescent looks at the big picture regarding community improvements

LA CRESCENT, Minn. (WXOW) - A public meeting in La Crescent Thursday night discussed plans to restructure the community.
Those plans may have a serious impact on the La Crescent School District.

One of the proposals is to come up with space for elderly housing which would directly impact land use in the city.

A second proposal calls for the building of a new community center on the current American Legion site.
The third, and probably most controversial one, is whether to move the La Crescent Elementary School to Abnet Field where Applefest and the Ice Arena are.

La Crescent Mayor, Mike Poellinger says they have options. "There is a potential that could impact other activities on Abnet Field. It could impact Applefest but Applefest has not always been there so it could move."

Mike Hackworth, Past President  of La Crescent Youth Hockey League  "As a father of a hockey player I've invested a lot of time into this particular organization so it's something that's valuable to myself, my family and ultimately to our community."

Mayor Poellinger says the challenge is that every plan has an impact on the other and there are a lot of moving parts that need to come into place first.

A future meeting will allow public input with the new school likely going to a public referendum.
