La Crosse firefighters respond to gas odor from buried tank

LA CROSSE, Wis.  (WXOW) – The La Crosse Fire Department responded to a ruptured tank near the Southside Oktoberfest grounds Friday morning.

About 10:00 a.m., a crew working to clean up the contaminated soil at the old Xcel Plant site, hit a tank which contained Mercaptan. It is added to natural gas to give it its odor.

To control the leak, the fire department said, the crew temporarily buried the tank to keep it from leaking until Xcel can remove it properly.

Officials said the leak poses no threat to people or the environment.
