LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – Part of a second-floor apartment on the corner of 9th and Vine Streets went up in flames Saturday evening.
Firefighters got the call just after 6 p.m. When they arrived at 303 9th St. N., they found flames and thick smoke coming from the back of the home, said Capt. Matt Buley with the La Crosse Fire.
The apartment is directly above A Touch of Sun laundromat.
Firefighters conducted a preliminary scan of the building and got the fire under control within five minutes, according to Buley.
"Visibility was zero when (firefighters) got in there so it took them a little bit of searching to find the seed of the fire as well as go through each room individually and verify that everyone was safe and out of the building," Buley said.
Tenants were not home at the time of the fire, according to the Fire Department. One person exited the laundromat on the first floor without any injuries.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Buley said the apartment sustained moderate fire and smoke damage. The laundromat has minor water damage.
