WASHINGTON (WXOW) -- A substance in oregano oil may help attack norovirus, an intestinal illness that often affects nursing homes, cruise ships, hospitals and schools.
Scientists have found that carvacrol -- which gives oregano its smell and flavor -- breaks down the outer coat of the virus and could potentially be used as a food and surface sanitizer.
Carvacrol would also be a non-toxic, harmless product to use in facilities where people may be more vulnerable to bleach or alcohol based cleaners.
