JANESVILLE, Wisconsin (WKOW) -- The woman accused of killing her 13-month of child with a prescription drug pill will make an initial appearance this afternoon in Rock County court.

Police allege Tallie Strommen, 23, gave her young daughter a methadone pill. Police said they were called Strommen's Janesville apartment December 26 to find the young girl lifeless.

She was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.

At the time, Strommen "had no explanation for what happened to the child," said Janesville Police Lt. Keith Lawver.

Lawver said an autopsy was performed on the child and, after toxicology results came back showing the cause of death to be a methadone overdose, police interviewed Strommen at length Tuesday.

Lawver said Strommen told police during the interview she had given her daughter a portion of a methadone pill. She was arrested and faces a charge of first degree reckless homicide.

Strommen has two other children, who Lawver said are now in protective custody. He did not know if the change would be permanent. Lawver said police do not get involved in custody cases.

He said Strommen did not give police a reason for giving the child the drug.

"We can speculate, but she never offered a conclusive motive," Lawver said.

Lawver said methadone is a prescription drug often used to treat pain. It's legal with a prescription, but Lawver said the drug is often abused on the streets.
