Woman accused of kidnapping Beloit baby now charged with Child Endangerment

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Authorities in Iowa have filed a child endangerment charge against Kristen Smith, the woman suspected of kidnapping a newborn baby in the Town of Beloit last Thursday.

Cedar County District Attorney Jeffrey Renander filed the charge Thursday against Smith, saying she endangered newborn Kayden Powell "in numerous ways."

Renander says Smith made an initial court appearance and remains at the county jail.

Police arrested Smith in West Branch, Iowa last Thursday on an outstanding warrant out of Texas. The next day, the West Branch police chief found the baby in a storage crate outside a gas station in freezing weather.

Police say Smith had kidnapped Kayden, who is the child of her half-sister Brianna Marshall. Smith was staying at the same Town of Beloit home as Marshall, Kayden, the child's father Bruce Powell and two other relatives.

Audio from the 911 call indicates the mother knew Smith had left the home early that Thursday morning, but did not suspect Smith had taken her 5-day-old child.

Federal prosecutors in Wisconsin have charged Smith with kidnapping, but she hasn't yet been taken into federal custody.
