LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - If Thursdays storm has left its mark on your sidewalks, pouring salt on the pavement can help.
The city of La Crosse provides a free salt and sand mixture for residents.
Putting salt on pavement helps the snow and ice melt, adding sand adds traction to the pavement and helps prevent falls.
Captain Todd Adams with the La Crosse Fire Department says "sidewalks get slippery, especially if it starts to run off and freezes again... so it's nice to have something to put down so you don't slip coming out of your back door, so people walking on your sidewalk don't slip and fall."
The free salt and sand mixture can be picked up at Fire Station 2, 3 and 4 and on Isle La Plume near the Niedbalski Bridge.
Firefighters advise bringing your own bucket and shovel.
