Police: Drive defensively, snow banks restricting visibility

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - With all the snow this winter, snow banks have built up along curbs and narrowed the street for drivers.

La Crosse Police are encouraging drivers to drive defensively.

Visibility is restricted at stop signs and intersections, according to Sgt. Randy Rank. Even if a driver has the right of way, Rank said slow down and anticipate that another driver has restricted sight lines.

"Your obstruction, your field of view is narrowed, and so there's not as much time to react from both the persons coming up to these intersection. There's been a couple accidents in town because of this," Rank said.

Police have seen 431 reported vehicle accidents from De. 1, 2013 to Feb. 27, 2014, compared to 323 from the same time last year.

That's 25 percent more accidents. But police said not all of these accidents are winter related.
