Gov. Walker: Startups help fuel economy

FORT MCCOY, Wis. (WXOW) - The unemployment rate in the Coulee Region is consistently lower than the rest of the state.

Governor Walker credits startup companies for job growth in the area.

He visited the Monroe County Economic Development Conference Thursday at Fort McCoy where local businesses learned how they can help grow the economy.

Sue and Eric Iverson make 2D and 3D images for marketing material for other businesses.

They used to work from home but now they own a space in Sparta's Business Park.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker says nationwide most new businesses are either startups or small businesses that are growing.

Steve Peterson, Monroe County Economic Development Coordinator, says almost a dozen startups have opened their doors in Monroe County.

Pica Grove has been in business for just over a year. Sue, Eric and one part-time employee handle all the work.

Sue is an art teacher at Sparta High School and already has a list of kids who want a job. She plans to start hiring within the next year and a half.
