LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - This winter has taken its toll on the roads.
At the La Crosse Regional Airport, six full-time staff are in charge of keeping the runways clear.
It's not uncommon for those employees to put in 24-hour days to maintain equipment and clear ice from the runways.
Instead of using salt they use a chemical mix. Salt is too corrosive on the planes, but the mix that they use can be costly.
Clinton Torp, Airport Manager, said "Ice is our arch nemesis. I'll take a snow storm over an ice storm any day. It's very difficult to keep the pavement clear. It's a higher standard than a road so we really have to keep that ice off the pavement."
