Missing Refuse and Recycling Carts Homeowners’ Responsibility

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - The City of La Crosse said some people have reported missing trash and recycling carts. And if this happens to you, you are responsible for the replacement costs.

Thankfully this problem isn't very widespread.

"It's not a major huge issue right now," said Dale Hexom, City of La Crosse Director of Public Works, "but again we have had some instances where we've been receiving reports of missing carts and we just want to try to nip it in the bud if we can."

One thing you can do to protect yourself is record the I.D. number on the front of your carts. These numbers are specific to each address.

"The serial number and the barcode is right in the front of the cart, right below the tip point," said Hexom. "Residents should record that number. We already have those numbers for each service address, two carts per address. Basically we've got 35,000 of those numbers in our database."

If your cart does go missing you can file a report online at the City of La Crosse Police Department website. The carts cost $85 dollars to replace.
