UPDATE: Shooting victim identified

UPDATE: PICKWICK, Minn. (WXOW) - The man fatally shot in his home in rural Winona County was a former Winona State University professor.

The Winona County Sheriff's Department said they found Mickey Ellenbecker, 72, shot in the back of the head in his home on Husman Ridge Road, east of Pickwick, Saturday afternoon.

Deputies recovered a .22 caliber pistol on site, according to Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand.

One other person was in the home at the time, Brand added. He is a friend of Ellenbecker's and a person of interest, still undergoing questioning.

No arrests have been made, yet, Brand said. His team is still collecting evidence.

Ellenbecker was transported to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse where he died Sunday.

Brand told News 19 that he knew Ellenbecker personally because the victim worked in the court system back in the 1970's.

An autopsy is being performed Monday.

Winona State University said Ellenbecker taught criminal justice until 2013.

According to Brand, crews found the man Saturday, face down in his kitchen, with a gunshot wound to the back of his head.

Responders arrived at the home on Husman Ridge Road, east of Pickwick, Minn., around 12:15 p.m. after reports of the shooting.

The victim, as well as one other person, were inside the home at that time.

The second person is undergoing questioning by investigators. 

No arrest has been made yet, according to Brand.

He said he does believe the incident was targeted, so the public is not in any danger.

PICKWICK, Minn. (WXOW) -- An elderly man is found shot in the head at his home in rural Winona County Saturday afternoon.

The shooting occurred at a home on Husman Ridge Road east of Pickwick around 12:15 p.m.

According to the Winona County Sheriff's Department, the victim, identified only as a 72-year-old man, was found face down in his kitchen with a gunshot wound to his head.

Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand tells WXOW that the man was flown via Medlink to a La Crosse hospital for treatment. 

Brand said that officers found the victim as well as another person in the home when they arrived on the scene.  The second person is undergoing questioning by investigators. 

The shooter is not in custody according to Brand. He did say that he believes the incident was targeted, so the public is not in any danger.
