LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Gundersen Health System's Medlink helicopter has a new landing spot.
The helipad is located on the roof of the Legacy Building, eight stories up.
They previously landed at ground-level.
The new helipad gives medics quick access to an exclusive elevator and helps them quickly transport patients.
The helipad floor is heated so landing in snow and ice isn't an issue.
Terry Dorshorst, a Medlink flight nurse, said, "We're able to land safely, unload in a dry, warm pavement and get our patient safely to the elevator and down to whatever floor they're waiting for."
Medlink responds to an average of 500 medical calls a year. The helicopter flies at an altitude of around 1,800 feet. It can travel from La Crosse to Tomah in 20 minutes.
