LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – The Cavalier Cupboard food pantry opened to Western Technical College students on campus on Tuesday afternoon.
Named for the school's mascot, the Cavalier Cupboard is available for free to all Western Technical College students who provide a valid student I.D.
Business Management student Lynda Smith is receiving credit for an idea which she brought up to some Western Technical College staff members nearly one year ago. Smith had the idea for the Cavalier Cupboard after learning some of her students were without food during a regular school day.
The Cavalier Cupboard is located in Room 119 in the Coleman Center and Smith hopes students use what is available to them.
"I want students to know there is nothing to be embarrassed about coming to the food pantry. We are here because we know you have an issue, we know that you need help. We're here, use us, we're open. That's why we're here, that's why I fought so hard to get this on campus," Smith said.
The Cavalier Cupboard is open Tuesdays and Fridays from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Students can visit once a week and receive up to two bags of groceries.
"I'm ready to help people. That's what I like to do and I hope people use it. I hope the students come and use the food pantry because I know it is something that is needed."
