Central Girls lose close game at state

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WXOW) - A free-throw by Jordanna Midthun gave the DeForest Norskies a 43-42 win over Central Red Raiders in a Division 2 semifinal game at the WIAA Girls State Basketball Tournament in Green Bay.

Down 19-10 after the first quarter, Central managed to chip away a the Norskies lead to bring it to 29-25 by halftime.

Behind players such as Jenna Kramer, who led the team with 16, the Red Raiders and DeForest stayed close for the remainder of the game.  They were tied at 37 at the end of the third quarter.

Central scored quickly to start the fourth quarter and broke out to a 42-38 lead with 6:14 left when DeForest Coach Doug Pickarts called timeout. After that, the lid was on the basket for the Red Raiders.

The Norskies used a patient offense to get back into the game to tie the game at 42 with 1:31 in regulation. The Red Raiders did get some looks at the basket, but DeForest's Kayla Goth blocked a shot with 28.2 seconds left that led to Midthun's drive and foul with 2.5 seconds remaining.

Shooting two, the first one clanked off the front of the rim.  After a Central timeout, she stepped up to the line and hit the winning shot.

A half-court shot by Brittany Baldwin was off the mark as time expired. She scored 12 for the game. Faith Skinner had 9.

Goth had 20 points, 8 rebounds, 7 blocks, and four steals for the Norskies.

DeForest plays Notre Dame, who defeated Pius 50-47 earlier Friday afternoon, in the Division 2 title game Saturday evening.

Central ends their season with a 21-6 record.
