UPDATE: Honorable mention for Central student in music competition

UPDATED - LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Bobby Levinger, the Central High School student who performed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra in the Bolz Young Artist Competition, took home an Honorable Mention.

He performed Wednesday evening with the Madison Symphony Orchestra for a chance to receive a school scholarship.

A Viroqua High School student, who played the marimba, took 2nd place.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - A Central High School student has been playing piano for more than half his life, and now Bobby Levinger will get the chance to perform with the Madison Symphony Orchestra as one of four finalists in the Bolz Young Competition.

He's up against musicians from across the state to win a scholarship and become the Madison Symphony Orchestra's 2014 Young Artist.

When Bobby was five-years-old he asked his parents for piano lessons. They said no at first, but eventually gave in and they knew right away he had a gift. Bobby credits perseverance and hard work for his success. He said, "To be really good at something, it doesn't just happen."

With talent and hard work comes sacrifice, once a week for the last five years Bobby has taken lessons in Minneapolis, making for a seven hour round trip.

Bobby has been recognized across the Nation. He placed 2nd in the La Crosse Rising Stars competition in January.

Bobby plans to study piano performance in college but right now he's practicing for the biggest performance of his life.

He is competing against two violinists and a percussionist. They each will play their piece accompanied by the Madison Symphony Orchestra.

Bobby's piece is over 10 minutes long. The judges will pick two students to perform with the orchestra again the next day and receive scholarship money for college.

A student from Viroqua High School is also in the competition.

The performances will be televised on the Wisconsin Public Television Network Wednesday at 7 p.m. and on their website.
