'Friends of the Marsh' unites to protect La Crosse's wetlands

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - A group of La Crosse area residents are coming together to preserve the marsh and EcoPark.

'Friends of the Marsh' held their first official meeting Monday.

Board members said their goal is to protect the wetlands from development. Recently there has been talk to build a highway over the marsh or extend the railway through it.

Board member Chuck Lee said the marsh is important to the city. It helps prevent flooding, it's a popular recreational venue, and it serves a diverse ecosystem.

"All the edges of the marsh have been eaten away over the years. It was, at one point, not that long ago, double the size it is now. And it disappears very quickly," Lee said.

Friends of the Marsh plans to meet at least once a year and is working to become a non-profit organization.
