Contractors to start laying brick work for new Northside Elementary

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Construction of the exterior of the new Northside Elementary School is almost complete.

About 95 percent of the building's exterior is up and crews are about to start laying brick work, said Eric Lehmann, Project Manager for Fowler & Hammer, Inc.

Tuesday the La Crosse School District updated the community on the progress of the construction. It's the second meeting of this kind during the building process.

"We want to be good neighbors, so it's critical for us that the neighbors know what's happening right inside their neighborhood," said Joe Ledvina, building and grounds supervisor for La Crosse schools.

Ledvina explained that the bricks and roof on the school will be installed to match other staples on the north side.

"We looked at the Northside Library, we looked at the northside fire house, the old Roosevelt building. And so we try to incorporate some of the architecture that's really desirable there into the new building," he said.

Even the contractors, Fowler & Hammer, Inc., are from the northside.

"We're up here, we can drive by, take a lot of pride into doing this and some of the key features with the synthetic turf and seeing how the neighborhood would be able to use that field," Lehmann said.

That's why staff, like Ledvina, said they're so proud of the project. He calls it a gift for the community, from the community.

"It's really the community that's providing the neighborhood and the northside and our kids to learn in a facility like this," Ledvina said.

Construction of Northside Elementary is expected to be completed in August. The school should be open for the coming school year and can accommodate 500 students.
