'Better Bottom Line' in place in La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Gov. Scott Walker is calling 2014 "The Year of the 'Better Bottom Line' and encouraging employers to hire people with disabilities.

One new La Crosse business has done just that, using a program with the state's Department of Workforce Development's Division of Vocational Rehabilitation to hire capable employees.

Great Harvest Bread Company hired Robert through the program. He helped set up the entire store and installed furniture and shelving.

Robert proved to be so valuable, the company hired him full-time to run the back end production the bakery, said Jennifer Williamson, owner of Great Harvest Bread Company.

"With the exception of one employee, and I think we've worked with four different people now throughout the coarse of the program, it's never been evident to me that there was even a disability present," Williamson said. "So for us we've just had a great opportunity to have really strong employees brought to us from an outside source."

DWD Deputy Secretary Jonathan Barry came to La Crosse Tuesday to commend Williamson for being part of the initiative.

DVR assists more than 17-thousand individuals with disabilities and provide state funding incentives for businesses to make a hire.
