La Crosse County gets boost in health rankings

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - There's research that shows the health of La Crosse County has improved. That comes from the 2014 County Health Rankings released by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

La Crosse County ranks as the 19th healthiest county in the state. That's up from 21st last year.

Those statistics apply to length of life, how healthy people feel, and the number of sick days employees use.

When it comes to health factors like availability of healthy food, exercise options and clinical care, La Crosse County ranks 3rd in state.

"Part of it is about programs that are available at the county level and at the city level. I know a lot of the work we're doing with the neighborhoods is going to improve socio-economic conditions. We're hoping that that's the case, there," said Catherine Kolkmeier, director of the La Crosse Medical Health Science Consortium.

The Medical Health Science Consortium will continue to look into what caused the increase, and see how residents can help La Crosse's rankings continue to do so.
