Aquinas Basketball Coaches, Schneider and Watson Stepping Down
La Crosse,WIS. (WXOW) ----------- Rick Schneider and Matt Watson have stepped down as the Head Basketball Coaches at Aquinas high school.
Both Schneider, who led the Boys and Watson, who coached the Girls tell News 19, that they are stepping away from the game to spend more time with their families.
“It was a tough day for Aquinas, they both meant so much to the school, it was a tough day, because they did so much for the school, we were lucky to have them,” said Aquinas AD Ted Knutson.
Schneider led Aquinas for 10 seasons leading the Blugolds to state titles in 2008, 2011 and 2013 and runners-up finishes in 2007 and 2009.
He recorded a 188-65 record over the span of his career including a 17-8 mark this past season.
Schneider was named the Wisconsin AP Coach of the Year in 2013.
"It's been hard really hard, I have met so many wonderful families and I think that's the biggest thing I have taken away from it, I have made friendships and relationships that will last a life time, the decision is 100% about my family being able to spend more time and really support my kids and their dreams and whatever journeys they want to try to take," said Schneider.
Watson meanwhile, led the Aquinas girls to a 110-58 record over his six seasons as Head Coach.
“It was a tough decision, always bitter sweet, I have always said, I base my life around family, work and coaching, and at the end of every season I evaluate where I’m at and right now there is not enough time for me to be great at all three. It’s a time issue more than anything and I need to spend more of it with my family and on my career,” said Watson.
Under Watson’s watch, Aquinas won 3 Regional Titles and reached the State Sectional Final once.
“It’s been an awesome experience, coaching it’s a passion and being able to coach at my alma mater has meant a great deal to me,” said Watson.
Aquinas is actively searching for new Head Coaches for both the Boys and Girls teams, with deadlines for applications closing on April 15th.
