Cody Harlan is a member of the 829th Engineer Company based in Richland Center.
He and more than 150 members of his unit are heading to Afghanistan to break down military bases as part of the effort to reduce the presence of U.S. troops.
This will be Cody's first time being deployed, but it's not his first goodbye. His twin brother Tylor was deployed to Iraq in 2009.
Cody said it's "Easier being the person leaving. It's my job. I have to do this."
Both Cody and Tyler have spent the majority of their lives together. They're roommates and they both attend the UW-La Crosse.
Cody said, "He came back and we were a lot closer. You really learn how to value things when you don't have them for a while."
To get the chance to deploy with his brother, Cody decided to join the military. They were supposed to be in the same unit, but things fell through. Now it's Cody's turn to leave.
His unit has trained at Fort McCoy all month and will continue training in Texas before they go overseas.
The unit is expected to come home next spring.
Cody plans to graduate from UW-La Crosse that fall.
