West Salem voters approve one of two referendums

WEST SALEM, Wis. (WXOW) -Voters in West Salem approved one of two school referendum questions Tuesday night.

The question that passed will let the school district spend $500,000 for security upgrades to the Elementary school.

The question that failed was for $32 million to build a new middle school for grades four through eight.

Since the first question passed, security upgrades will be made to the current Elementary school.

The school district will expand the camera system and locks, and move the main office to the entrance of the school so visitors have to walk past the main office to get in.

Since the first question didn't pass, West Salem Superintendent Troy Gunderson says they will have to go back to the drawing board and find another solution.

Gunderson says "Our school board now has an idea of what the community thinks about that type of investment and we'll just have to roll up our sleeves and get back to the table and start thinking about, and talking about, the planning that needs to take place and where we go from here."

Security updates to the Elementary school should be complete within the next year.
