West Salem School District superintendent reacts to referendum results

WEST SALEM, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Voters in West Salem approved one of two school referendum questions.

The district can spend 500-thousand dollars for security upgrades to the elementary school.  But the request for 32-million dollars for a new middle school, failed.

Security upgrades to the current elementary school include expanding the camera system and locks and moving the main office.
Since the first question didn't pass, the superintendent says even though the referendum for the new middle school failed, he's pleased with the community's participation in the school referendums.

"The good news for us is that people were actively engaged in this process. We managed to inspire 2,700 to come out and vote and I think it leaves us right for a good conversation about what is the method.  It's such a complicated answer to this problem that moving forward is going to require the input from lots of people and i think we got the people engaged at this point," said West Salem School District's Superintendent, Troy Gunderson.

Gunderson says they should finish the security upgrades within the next year.
