Governor cites prices, fewer prospects, in passing on Final Four

JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- Governor Walker says he's passing on attending the Badgers basketball team's Final Four game Saturday in Arlington, Texas, citing high ticket prices, and reduced opportunities to promote the state.

Walker attended the 2011 Super Bowl in Texas to see the Green Bay Packers play Pittsburgh.

But Walker says there was more time, and chances to network and cultivate business possibilities for Wisconsin at that event.

"We did some things with Governor Daniels (Indiana) at that point, met with their reception, (went) to SMU, to Jerry Jones event, went to some other things to talk about Wisconsin," Walker told reporters after signing a bill in Janesville to remove a barrier to economic development.

"In this case, you don't have any of that (business receptions) with the NCAA. So it doesn't have quite the pre-game effect you have with the Super Bowl," the governor said.

Walker says prohibitive ticket prices for the game were also a factor. He did not elaborate on whether he could attend in an official capacity, as the governor of the state of  one of the participating schools.

Walker says he will watch the game with family. The governor said his youngest son - a UW-Madison student - is traveling to Texas and will attend the game.
