UW- La Crosse hosts festival to promote languages, cultures

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW)- Faculty, students and others had the chance to learn more about languages and cultures during the Festival of Languages at UW- La Crosse Thursday.

UW- La Crosse has about 10,000 students and around 1,000 are enrolled in language courses.  The language department hosted the event to increase this number and show what their department has to offer.  This was a way to celebrate languages and highlight that studying a language will only help benefit students in the future.

Students not only learn a new language but they can learn a lot about culture.  Zumba dancing in French, Tango lessons and German games were just a few of the activities provided for the students to learn more about different cultures.  Leslee Poulton, Department Chair of Modern Languages, stated "It's not just words.. it's filling in all of the white spaces in between the words just like in music.when you actually have silences that add to the music and there are times when you are quiet.  That is what learning and speaking in another language does.  It helps you fill in gaps that a single language isn't going to do for you."

They hope the festival will expand and become an annual event.
