School board approves charter high school

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - The La Crosse School District is promoting project based learning at the high school level.

Monday night, the school board approved the 7 Rivers Community High School. Students of all different grades will work together on a curriculum and projects they crafted.

The school will initially open in the Hogan Administrative Center building with plans to expand. It's the first time the Hogan building has housed students since 1980.

"We're just looking to create what parents have said was a desire of theirs and what students had said was a desire of theirs. To create the middle school models that are already in place, to make a high school option available for them is just seemingly a natural next step," said Matt Weege, an advisor for the 7 Rivers Community High School.

The Department of Public Instruction gave the district a $175,000 planning grant. Later this week, the district will apply for $150,000 to launch the school for the 2014-2015 school year.

7 Rivers is accepting applications for 9th and 10th grade students through April 30. Information can be found at
