Fire temporarily closes Onalaska Walmart

ONALASKA, Wis. (WXOW) - A fire closed the Onalaska Walmart Saturday.

Around 11 a.m. the Onalaska Fire Department got a call for an odor of smoke in the building. When they got on scene they found a fire in the ceiling,  between the levels of the roof.

Employees and customers were evacuated. No one was hurt and there is minor smoke damage to the building.

The Onalaska Fire Chief said the potential of a fire in the ceiling of such a large building could burn the entire building. Firefighters were able to put out the fire relatively quickly.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but David Tovar, the Walmart Vice President of Communication, said a lightning strike and the pretty heavy storms that passed through our area at the time could be a cause.

Walmart closed until 3 p.m. while firefighters made sure the air quality was safe.
