Conservation Congress to hold hearings for comment

Posted: Updated:

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Residents in all 72 Wisconsin counties will get a chance to vote on outdoor-related issues at local meetings this week.

The annual meeting of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress will be held Monday at 7 p.m. Locations are listed online.

Attendees can weigh in on issues ranging from allowing the hunting of tundra swans to making trolling with a single line legal statewide.

The chairman of WCC La Crosse County is Marc Schultz. He says tundra swans wouldn't be easy to hunt because they tend to congregate in areas closed to hunting.

But conservation groups still don't like the idea. They worry that hunters will mistakenly shoot at once-endangered trumpeter swans instead.

Another proposal shaping up to be controversial is a rule that would allow hunters to retrieve hound dogs on private property without landowner permission.

Other proposals up for discussion are possible changes to the state's trout fishing seasons and fixing the date for the annual opening day of inland fishing.
